The Spanish weather agency has warned that temperatures could be higher than normal until October.

There is no end to the hot summer in Europe, as heatwave warnings have been issued from Spain to Germany.

Droughts and fires have broken out across the Mediterranean as a result of the hot weather, which looks set to continue throughout August and beyond in some parts, Euronews reports.

Extreme heat currently claims more than 175,000 lives each year in Europe, with numbers set to rise, according to a report published today by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Yellow, orange and red heatwave warnings have been issued by Spain's Meteorological Agency (AEMET) as temperatures threaten to reach 43C in the southeast.

High temperatures are forecast across the country's east coast, south and center for most of August, reaching maximum intensity on Thursday – with one in nine AEMET weather stations reaching 40 degrees Celsius or more.

Grenada and northwestern Murcia will be hardest hit.

The temperature in Barcelona broke records on Tuesday, reaching 40 degrees Celsius - the hottest day the Catalan capital has seen in at least 110 years, when records began.

According to AEMET, temperatures are likely to be above normal until October in most of Spain.

Italy: Rome under extreme heat warning

Helicopters and fire engines battled a massive fire northwest of Rome on Wednesday as a heat wave swept through the Italian capital.

The city is under a maximum heat warning, with high temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius.

Florence, Bologna, Milan and Turin are among other cities also under red weather warnings.

While the flames in Monte Mario are now under control, Rome and surrounding areas remain on high fire alert.

The south of the country is facing ongoing drought, with farmers in Sicily forced to slaughter or sell livestock due to severe water shortages.

Germany: Heat warning issued as temperatures soar above 35 degrees Celsius

It's not just southern Europe that is dealing with the heat: Germany's weather service DÜD has issued a warning as parts of the country face temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius.

There are warnings that the country is unprepared for heatwaves, with Frankfurt's Senckenberg Society for Nature Research calling for the development of early warning systems as the threat of wildfires grows.

France: Extreme heat hits the Olympics in Paris

Temperatures in Paris reached 35 degrees Celsius this week as the city continues to host the Olympics.

The WWA has warned that high temperatures can affect athletes' performance and lead to an increase in heat-related illnesses.

Southeastern France is also facing extreme weather, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius until at least August 4.

Orange heat wave warnings have been issued by the Meteo-France weather service in Corsica, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and the Occitanie region.

"Similar heat waves affecting Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Morocco are now expected to occur on average once every 10 years in today's climate," they stated.
