Who is Ghalibaf, the key Iranian figure with whom the US is negotiating?
Bagher Ghalibaf

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) since 2020, has appeared at the center of reports of possible contacts between Iran and the United States. According to Israeli sources, he is considered one of the possible interlocutors in the negotiations announced by US President Donald Trump.

However, Ghalibaf himself has denied these claims. In a reaction on the X platform, he stated that “no negotiations have taken place with the United States” and described the reports as “fake news” intended to cover up the difficulties of the US and Israel.

Ghalibaf is a consolidated figure in the Iranian establishment, with strong ties to key power structures, including the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and the inner circle of the supreme leadership. He is considered close to Mojtaba Khamenei and has had an influence on recent political developments in the country.

Born in 1961 in Mashhad, he has had a long career that includes military, security and political roles. He served as a commander in the Revolutionary Guard during the Iran-Iraq war, as police chief and for 12 years as mayor of Tehran. He has tried several times in the past to be elected president of Iran, gaining a reputation as a perennial candidate for the highest office.

His figure is also associated with controversy. He has been mentioned on various occasions for corruption allegations and for harsh stances towards domestic protests, including the use of force by the authorities. In public discourse, he has maintained a strong line against the United States, warning of serious consequences for the region in the event of escalation.

However, recent developments have raised his political profile. In a context where several key figures in the regime have been eliminated and the supreme leadership has not appeared publicly, Ghalibaf is seen by some analysts as one of the most influential politicians in Iran today.

According to academic assessments, he represents a figure who combines military experience, political influence and institutional connections, which could make him an important actor in any potential negotiation process. However, his public stance remains clear: he denies any dialogue with the US and emphasizes following Tehran's official line.
