Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has defended Iran's right to enrich uranium "for peaceful purposes," at a time when the Trump administration is pressuring Tehran over its nuclear program.
" Iran, like any other member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, has the full right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes ," Lavrov said during a press conference in Moscow.
His statement comes as the United States continues to push for tougher restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities. One of Washington's main demands has been for Iran to abandon uranium enrichment, which the US argues could be used to develop nuclear weapons.
Tehran, on the other hand, insists that its nuclear program has only civilian and energy purposes.
Lavrov also said that Russia will not interfere in the negotiation process between Washington and Tehran, but will support any agreement that is accepted by both sides.
" We will support any solution that is agreed upon and accepted by the negotiating parties themselves. In this case, the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran ," Lavrov said, according to the Russian Interfax agency.
