Russia is reportedly planning to propose to Delhi the production of SU-57 fighter jets in India with technology transfer to reduce costs and time thanks to local partners…
Russia is considering the possibility of starting production of the fifth-generation SU-57 fighter jet in India, through an agreement that would include technology transfer and industrial cooperation with New Delhi.
The proposal, relaunched in March 2025, aims to reduce costs and delivery time by leveraging local infrastructure, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and other Indian defense companies among potential partners in the project.
The recent and in-depth meeting in China between Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi, leaders of Russia and India respectively, will apparently have served to accelerate the "white smoke".
The axis of fighters between Russia and India
Dmitry Shugayev, director of the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, was clear when he said: "As is known, India owns our S-400 system. There is an opportunity to expand cooperation in this area as well. This means new supplies. We are currently negotiating on this." He added that another area of cooperation would include the supply of SU-57 fighter jets to Delhi.
Citing unidentified defense sources, Indian media, as the Eurasiantimes portal writes, reported that Russian defense agencies are currently conducting internal analyses to determine the amount of capital needed to produce the SU-57 aircraft in India.
The Kremlin's idea? Cutting costs, shortening preparation time, and utilizing existing infrastructure for greater practice.
Potential partners for domestic production of the Su-57 include state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which had previously secured a contract to assemble the Su-30MKI at its plant in Nashik, according to the report.
The rumors emerged after Russian state exporter Rosoboronexport announced that it would utilize the existing Su-30MKI infrastructure for the indigenous production of the Su-57E in India.
Moscow's (possible) move
Recall that India previously partnered with Moscow in the FGFA (Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft) program for the production of the SU-57.
However, Delhi unilaterally withdrew from the deal in 2018 citing concerns including excessive costs, insufficient technology transfer and an undesirable platform of secrecy.
Russia submitted a new offer for the SU-57 to the Asian giant in February 2025, subsequently expanding its scope and making it more favorable. The comprehensive offer presented by the Kremlin would include three elements: domestic production of the SU-57E, modernization of the SU-30MKI, and assistance for India's Fifth Generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program.
India Today newspaper quoted anonymous sources as saying that India and Russia could collaborate on the development of fighter jets, especially as both sides are looking to strengthen defense ties, with the possible sale of other systems, such as the S-400 air defense systems. /Adapted from Il Giornale/
