The war in the Middle East, started by Israel and the US, continues to escalate. Iran attacked at least 5 Persian Gulf countries on Sunday, while US President Donald Trump does not rule out the possibility of entering Iranian territory with military troops.
So what has happened in summary in the Middle East, which are the countries most attacked with drones and missiles?
A new wave of Iranian attacks hit the Persian Gulf on Sunday, with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait reporting new attacks. Saudi Arabia's Defense Ministry reported the capture of 15 drones. In Bahrain, the attacks caused "material damage" to a major desalination plant.
Kuwait's national oil company announced a "preliminary" reduction in crude oil production after the attack. The military said fuel tanks at Kuwait International Airport were targeted in a drone attack and two firefighters were killed.
US and Israeli airstrikes overnight hit five oil facilities around Tehran, an Iranian official said. The official said the five facilities were “damaged” but “the fire was brought under control.”
Donald Trump has said he is not interested in negotiating with Iran, raising the possibility that a war with Iran will only end when Tehran no longer has a functioning military and its leadership is completely destroyed. But while Trump claimed that the US and Israel had “destroyed” the Iranian regime, he offered only a vague description of what he meant by Iran’s unconditional surrender.
Trump left open the possibility of deploying US troops on the ground. The US president spoke to reporters hours after traveling to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to participate in the transfer of the bodies of six US soldiers killed in the early days of his war against Iran.
According to reports, a majority consensus has almost been reached by the clerical body that will appoint the successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and become the next supreme leader of Iran. The Israeli military said it will continue to pursue any successor to Khamenei.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country "will be forced to respond" to any attack or invasion attempt by a neighboring country. His comments came after a backlash from hardliners and within Iranian military ranks after the president appeared to apologize to neighboring Gulf states attacked by Iran as they targeted U.S. military bases. Pezeshkian said his comments were "misinterpreted by the enemy."
At least 16 people were killed in Lebanon after Israel resumed its assault on Beirut and southern Lebanon. Four were killed in a Beirut hotel explosion and 12 were killed in airstrikes in southern Lebanon, as Israel said it was targeting "key commanders" in the foreign operations wing of the IRGC's Quds Force.
In a social media post, Trump repeated his criticism of the UK's lack of immediate support for the US-Israeli attacks on Iran and claimed that Downing Street is now "seriously considering" sending two aircraft carriers to the region. "That's OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don't need them anymore - But we will remember them," the US president wrote.
Trump warned in a post on Truth Social that more Iranian officials would be targeted, saying: "Today Iran will be hit very hard!"
China's foreign minister says war with Iran "should never have happened." Wang warned that the US-Israeli push for regime change in Iran "will not find popular support" and said "the world cannot return to the law of the jungle." /Adapted from The Guardian /
