In a year dominated by images of violence and war – from Russian aggression in Ukraine, to the Israel-Hamas conflict, perpetual tensions in the Middle East, the civil war in Syria, and North Korea's aggressive isolation – an annual report comes to remind us that peace still exists, and that some countries continue to maintain stability and security at high levels.
This is the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), which ranks 163 countries and territories according to their level of peace. The index uses 23 indicators and measures three areas: internal security, involvement in conflicts, and the level of militarization.
The 2025 report finds that global peace is in decline, with conflict, militarization and economic insecurity on the rise. The number of armed conflicts has reached 59, the highest since the end of World War II.
According to the GPI 2025, Albania ranks 65th in the world for peace and security, maintaining a stable position compared to last year. The Balkans as a whole remains relatively stable, with North Macedonia (61) and Montenegro (63) ranking slightly better than Albania.
