President Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to visit Moscow on Thursday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discuss the 30-day ceasefire proposal.
Ukraine agreed to a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, the State Department announced.
Ukraine accepted the US proposal after a key meeting between American and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia, Axios reports.
A ceasefire, if implemented, would be an extremely important diplomatic breakthrough in the 3-year war between Russia and Ukraine.
But the Kremlin has not yet reacted to the US proposal.
The United States agreed to lift the suspension of intelligence sharing with Ukraine and resume arms shipments to the country, which were halted 10 days ago.
President Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to visit Moscow on Thursday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discuss the 30-day ceasefire proposal.
Waltz said he will speak with his Russian counterpart in the coming days, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with his G7 counterparts soon and discuss the way forward.
Rubio says "we will present the offer" to Russia.
“We will tell them that this is what is on the table, Ukraine is ready to stop the war and is ready to sit down for talks, and after that it will be up to them to say yes or no,” he said.
Rubio continued, "I hope they say yes, and if they do, then I think we've made great progress."
The US-Ukraine statement emphasizes that the ceasefire was subject to agreement and could be extended beyond 30 days "by mutual agreement" between Kiev and Moscow.
"The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is key to achieving peace," the statement said.
The US also committed to raising the proposals discussed with Ukraine with the Russians, while the Ukrainian side "reiterated that European partners will be included in the peace process," the statement said.
The US delegation was led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
The Ukrainian delegation was led by President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak. The Ukrainian foreign and defense ministers also participated.
According to the joint statement, the US and Ukraine also agreed to conclude as soon as possible "a comprehensive agreement on the development of Ukraine's critical mineral resources."
It was not immediately clear whether this means the countries will sign the agreement that has already been negotiated or whether there will be talks on a revised deal.
The State Department said the two delegations agreed to appoint their negotiating teams and immediately begin talks on a peace agreement with Russia.
