Israel has announced that a cargo ship with 25 crew members was hijacked in the Red Sea on Sunday. The Israel Defense Forces claim Yemen's Houthi rebels seized the ship. The ship is owned by a British company and operated by a Japanese firm, according to the Israeli prime minister's office without giving details of the companies.
" The hijacking of a cargo ship by the Houthis near Yemen in the southern Red Sea is a very serious incident with global consequences. The ship left Turkey on its way to India, staffed by civilians of various nationalities, excluding Israelis. It is not an Israeli ship ," the IDF said in a statement.
The Houthis are a Shiite political and military organization in Yemen that has been fighting a civil war in the country against a coalition backed by Saudi Arabia. They have expressed support for the Palestinians and organized protests in Yemen against Israel's attack on Gaza.
Regarding this hostage taking, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Iran of a "step forward" in its "aggression".
This is because according to Israel, Iran supports the Yemen-based Houthis and is suspected of sponsoring their actions in the Red Sea.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces claimed to have raided the homes of senior Hamas officials in Gaza City, while Hamas' armed wing, the Al Qassam Brigades, claimed to have attacked Israeli soldiers in a village southeast of the city.
The situation in Gaza continues to remain alarming, with the civilian population left at the mercy of fate, without water and food./Pamphlet
