'Le Monde' reports that a French soldier has been killed and 5 others injured after a drone attack on a military base near the city of Erbil, in northern Iraq, at a time when violence in the region is escalating due to the war between the US-Israel and Iran.

The attacked base is located west of Erbil and houses French and Iraqi troops who are engaged in operations against the ISIS terrorist organization.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by the "Islamic Resistance in Iraq", a coalition of armed groups linked to Iran, which has also carried out other attacks on American interests in the country.

The news was also confirmed by French President Emmanuel Macron in a post on X, where he announced that the killed soldier is Marshal Arnaud Frion, a member of the 7th Battalion of the Varces Alpine Hunters. He expressed his condolences to his family and colleagues, stressing that the attack on French forces is unacceptable.

According to him, the presence of French troops in Iraq since 2015 is part of the fight against terrorism.

"To his family and friends I express my deepest condolences and the solidarity of the nation. Some of our soldiers were injured. France stands by them and their relatives. This attack against our forces, engaged in the fight against ISIS since 2015, is unacceptable. Their presence in Iraq is part of the fight against terrorism. The war in Iran cannot justify such attacks," Macron wrote.

According to reports, attacks were also carried out during the day on US military bases, the US consulate in Erbil, the embassy in Baghdad, and the Victory base near Baghdad International Airport. These attacks have been ongoing since the beginning of the US and Israeli military campaign against Iran and have intensified in recent days.

Armed groups linked to Iran have said the attacks are revenge for the assassination of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as for military operations against Iran.
