Prime Minister Edi Rama is visiting Greece, where he will participate in the annual Delphi Economic Forum.

But it seems that the main attention from Albanian diplomacy, at least in the last 24 hours, has been lobbying for an official meeting between Edi Rama and his Greek counterpart, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

In Tirana, media have announced that Rama will hold a one-on-one meeting with Mitsotakis, in the office of the Greek Prime Minister, but according to Greek media, nothing is certain and negotiations continue.

The Greek newspaper ToVima writes that Edi Rama has planned to visit Greece this week to participate in the sessions of the Delphi Economic Forum, while diplomatic contacts are continuing, considering the possibility of a meeting in Athens with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

According to reports, both sides have been in constant communication over the past 24 hours to determine whether Mitsotakis' agenda could foresee an official meeting, as requested by Tirana.

Rama is scheduled to deliver a speech at the Delphi Economic Forum on Wednesday afternoon.

Given that the two leaders will speak at the forum, which will be held at the site of the same name and eponym in Delphi, in south-central Greece, a 30-minute drive from each other, this is perhaps seen as the most likely location for a face-to-face meeting, Greek media write.

Meanwhile, according to them, another option remains Tuesday in Athens, after Rama's arrival, or Thursday before his departure, as Mitsotakis will attend an informal EU summit in Nicosia later that day.

As of Monday afternoon, only a brief meeting between the two leaders in Delphi appears to have been confirmed, although efforts are being made to organize a more formal meeting at the Greek Prime Minister's office at the Maximos Mansion.

On the other hand, Albanian media are reporting a scheduled meeting between Prime Ministers Rama and Mitsotakis on Wednesday morning. According to Top Channel, Edi Rama will most likely be the only leader to be received by his counterpart Mitsotakis at the Prime Minister's headquarters in Maximos.

One of the most important issues between the two countries for which a solution has been agreed through the Court is that of the maritime border. Athens is ready to resume discussions on this issue as soon as possible, as this is considered the last moment in which the two sides can come up with an agreement that satisfies both parties. Greece, due to internal developments, may head towards early elections next year, which seems to indicate that Mitsotakis will push this issue forward, in order to have one more “card” in his hand that he can also use for domestic politics.

On the other hand, Edi Rama aims for the EU membership process, and to accelerate the process he is willing to make any compromise.

A meeting between the two Prime Ministers, according to Greek media, would be of particular interest at this time, as the Greek Foreign Ministry has announced an initiative that it intends to undertake immediately, regarding the Western Balkans and the acceleration of the procedures for the accession of six states (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia), with the aim of the first EU enlargement taking place within the second half of 2027, a period during which our country will hold the presidency of the Council of the EU.

According to TaNea, the Greek initiative that Giorgos Gerapetritis is already "leading" is expected to move at three levels: at the level of consultations within the EU on support for the Greek initiative by other states (with Germany and Spain having already openly expressed their willingness to contribute), at the level of creating a network of countries with the aim of supporting the Western Balkans, and at the level of a targeted presence in the Western Balkan states through a mission that the head of Greek diplomacy plans to carry out in May.

The specific mission to the Western Balkans, for which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working diligently so that the six visits of Gerapetritis have the necessary temporal proximity to each other, although, while Athens had planned to take place, if possible, within the current month, regional developments have overturned this timeline, remains a strategic priority on our country's diplomatic agenda, especially against the backdrop of the instability that is once again affecting the wider region due to the crisis in the Middle East, as well as the tectonic changes taking place in transatlantic relations. /Pamphlet/
