Israel-Gaza War, the method Israeli soldiers use to find corpses

Ohad Hatzofe, an ecologist, is using birds of prey to help the Israeli army recover dead bodies at sites where Hamas attacked on October 7.

The ecologist, part of Israel's Nature and Parks Authority, finds the migration patterns of numerous birds using GPS tracking devices. His data helped locate 4 bodies after he was asked for help on October 23.

Hatzofe says that in finding the carcasses, he studies the entire path taken by the birds in the territories where the carcasses are thought to have been killed and tracks where the birds stop using GPS. Although the trackers don't provide live video of the path the birds take, they can tell Hatzofe how they're moving, what altitude they're at, and other data points that might be of interest. He then correlates that information with satellite imagery.

On the other hand, in addition to the aid he is giving to Israel, the ecologist is also trying to track down his friend who disappeared together with his 12-year-old son after Hamas attacked their house in Nir Oz, in a province in southern Israel.

He also hopes that the war will end soon, as the damage to both Israelis and Palestinians is considerable.

Finally, ecologist Ohad Hatzofe says: I am very happy to be using my knowledge of bird movement and behavior to help wherever we can.
