The director of the CIA, William Burns, traveled today to Doha to discuss the efforts to release the hostages in Gaza with the Prime Minister of Qatar and the head of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.
According to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity, Burns met with Mossad chief David Barnea and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, AP reports.
The Hamas militant group that rules Gaza is holding what officials estimate are about 240 hostages taken in Hamas's deadly October 7 incursion into Israel. International officials are believed to be pursuing a deal in which Hamas could release some hostages in exchange for a pause in Israel's air, ground and sea attacks on Gaza.
Qatar is a frequent mediator in international relations with Hamas, and several senior political leaders of Hamas make their home in the Gulf country. The US official stressed that Burns was not playing a leading role in the negotiations.
