The Israel-Palestine war, the US votes in favor of the resolution

The US vetoes an "anti-Israel" resolution that calls for a "humanitarian pause" in the raging Israel-Hamas conflict as the text does not respect Israel's right to defend itself, the US ambassador said.

It is learned that 12 of the 15 members of the Council voted in favor of the resolution presented by Brazil and negotiated over several days, while Russia and the United Kingdom abstained. Albania maintained a principled position.

Despite the vote against the United States of America that supported Israel and the right to its defense and the abstention of Great Britain, Albania was ranked among the countries that condemn any attack on civilians, as well as the terrorist acts of Hamas against Israel.

Albania voted in favor of the resolution that requires respect for international law for civilians, including medical personnel, and requires access for humanitarian organizations to send aid. The United States was opposed, but as one of the five permanent members of the Security Council the vote counted as a veto.

"The United States is disappointed that this resolution does not mention Israel's right to self-defense," said Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador.

"The draft resolution was not approved due to the negative vote of a permanent member of the council," said Sergio Franca Danese, Brazilian ambassador to the United Nations.

The resolution demanded that the Council "resolutely condemns all violence and hostility against civilians and all acts of terrorism". The resolution proposed by Brazil, which holds the presidency of the Security Council, says that the body "unequivocally opposes and condemns the horrific terrorist attacks by Hamas... and the hostage-taking". The text also "calls on all parties to fully comply with their obligations under international law."

The vote comes after the Security Council on Monday rejected a Russian resolution condemning the spiraling violence in the Middle East. That resolution did not single out Hamas for its surprise attack on Israel on October 7, and it was rejected by the permanent members, the United States, the United Kingdom and France, as well as Japan.
