A perhaps unexpected figure is emerging as one of Donald Trump's most likely successors to lead the strong Maga movement, while another contender, US Vice President JD Vance, has seen his influence decline after a series of recent setbacks.
Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State who also serves as national security adviser and acting director of the U.S. Agency for International Development, has been included in Time magazine's list of the most influential people of 2026, with Vance conspicuously absent. Rubio has been steadily rising in polls among Republican voters, while his rival, Vance, has been declining.
Once a critic of Trump, with whom he ran for the Republican nomination in 2016, Rubio has since become one of his most loyal allies. The relationship appears to be mutual. According to ABC News, the president has privately spoken of Rubio's "popularity" and "love" and even asked donors at Mar-a-Lago whether they preferred him or Vance.
The current positions held by Rubio are among the most influential in Washington, and the posts of Secretary of State and National Security Advisor have been held simultaneously by only one other person in history: Henry Kissinger in the mid-1970s.
Rubio's "comeback story"
Although they are close allies today, the relationship between Rubio and Trump has not always been amicable. During the 2016 race, Rubio called Trump a “fraud” and declared that he was “totally unprepared to be president of the United States.” He also called the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape “vulgar, scandalous and unjustifiable.”
Trump, on the other hand, called Rubio “Mr. Meltdown,” “Little Marco,” and a “clown.” In a series of unusual speeches, they even debated who sweated the most. Trump’s victory for the Republican nomination marked a turning point for Rubio, who immediately supported him and during the 2024 presidential campaign was included in the list of vice presidential candidates, but ultimately lost to Vance.
This change may seem unexpected, but according to John Mark Hansen, an expert on American politics at the University of Chicago, it's part of Maga culture. "It seems like in Maga you can have a kind of comeback story," he added.
Cautious balancing with Iran
While Vance has positioned himself as a staunch isolationist and supporter of the "America First" policy, Rubio represents a more traditional and tough Republican approach to conflicts.
