Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to the media in Beijing after attending China's military parade alongside leader Xi Jinping and his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong Un. Putin called his visit to China very positive and useful.
"I must say that this working format allows us to conduct very productive negotiations. We were able to discuss any topic, which is very important ," he said.
Putin said agreements were reached regarding Power of Siberia 2, a proposed natural gas pipeline to export energy from Russia to China.
"This will create a competitive advantage for our Chinese friends, as they will receive the product at the market price, not at an inflated price," Putin added.
The Russian president also touched on the topic of Ukraine. Putin said that every country has the right to choose how to ensure its own security, including Ukraine. But he stressed that the security of one country cannot be achieved at the expense of another, reiterating that Moscow opposes Kiev's membership in NATO. However, he added that Russia has never questioned its right to join the European Union.
"I agree with those who believe that every country has the right to choose its own system to ensure its own security. This applies to all countries, including Ukraine. But this also means that the security of one country cannot be ensured at the expense of the security of another country, in this case the Russian Federation. We have always opposed Ukraine being a member of this North Atlantic bloc, but we have never questioned its right to engage in its own economic and business activities as it wishes. This also applies to EU membership ," Putin said.
Asked by the media in Beijing if he was ready to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky, Putin said he was open to a bilateral meeting, as long as the meeting was well prepared. He further added that there was no point in meeting with Zelensky, but stressed that he had given Trump his word for such a meeting in Moscow.
"I have never refused to do this, if it leads to positive results. By the way, Donald Trump asked me, if possible, to hold such a meeting with Vladimir Zelensky. As for possible meetings with Zelensky, I have already spoken about this. In general, I have never ruled out the possibility of such a meeting. Is there any sense in these meetings? If Zelensky is ready, let him come to Moscow and the meeting will take place ," Putin said.
Asked whether the war in Ukraine was close to an end, Putin told reporters in Beijing that there were positive signals for peace with Kiev, but warned that if a deal was not reached, he could achieve his goals militarily.
"I believe that, if there is sound logic, it is possible to agree on an acceptable option or way to end this conflict. We also see that the current US administration has the will and desire to find this solution. I think there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We will see it. Otherwise, we will be forced to solve all our objectives by military means ," Putin said.
Regarding the situation on the battlefield, Putin said that Russian forces are advancing on all fronts and that Ukraine is incapable of a large-scale offensive.
"Ukraine is not capable of launching large-scale offensives and says that it is now trying to fill the gaps by regrouping its forces. We should not be calm now, perhaps some reserves are being prepared, some actions, large-scale events, but preliminary analysis by our military experts says that the Ukrainian army does not have this capability ," the Russian president said.
Putin further emphasized that he did not discuss during this meeting the severe economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the West, as this fact does not bother him.
"Why didn't we discuss them? It doesn't bother us. The events in Ukraine are just a justification for decisions of an economic nature against certain countries ," Putin said.
