Gulf countries are becoming increasingly divided over their stance on Iran: While some countries want the war to end with a deeply weakened Iran, others favor diplomatic agreements and some remain undecided, a Middle East expert told CNN.
“The Gulf states are actually deeply divided about what they want to see happen next,” said Hasan Alhasan, a fellow for Middle East policy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
The Middle East expert added that the UAE has been steadfast since the early days of the war, having been the victim of most of the Iranian attacks. They would like this war to end with Iran completely defenseless.
He further emphasized that this is a position that Bahrain is also quite aligned with, noting that Bahrain recently drafted a United Nations Security Council resolution to forcefully reopen the global trade artery, the Strait of Hormuz.
On the other hand, neighboring countries such as Qatar and Oman have called for a diplomatic solution to end the war, while Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have shown "ambivalence" about their stance, as the Gulf continues to suffer economically.
"Omani and Qatar have been more vocal about the need to ensure an immediate de-escalation of the situation and to bring about a ceasefire and end this conflict. There has been a lot of ambivalence from the Saudis and the Kuwaitis, and we are not exactly sure where they stand," he concluded.
