The European Commission clarified today that there are no general fuel shortages in the EU at the moment, however that the EU is coordinating and preparing for different scenarios.

"The availability of fuel is an advantage. There is considerable capacity in the EU to refine crude oil and produce jet fuel," said spokeswoman Eva Hrdcirova.

The Commission's reassuring statements seem not to be enough to alleviate concerns about this issue, especially at a time when they are being intensified by statements made by both the Energy Commissioner, who expressed his concern about a possible crisis in the sector, and by airlines.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, EU Transport Ministers will participate in the informal videoconference organised by the Cyprus Presidency, in response to the developing situation in the Middle East and its direct impact on energy markets and the European transport sector.

According to a European official, "although the full consequences remain uncertain, it is clear that there are disruptions to energy infrastructure, airspace and the global supply chain."

The aim of tomorrow's videoconference, according to the official, is "targeted initiatives focusing on three priorities: strong EU coordination, reducing dependence on external fossil fuels, and implementing concrete and enforceable measures."

Finally, an important parameter is the potential increase in air transport prices, with member states underlining the need for a coordinated, proportionate and compatible approach with the EU single market.
