Investigations and checks are underway this Monday, April 20, by the Rome Prosecutor's Office in connection with a case involving a secret group called "Squadra Fiore", in which former members of the law enforcement forces are suspected of preparing secret files. In total, eleven people are under investigation for various criminal offenses.
The operations are being carried out by ROS carabinieri on the orders of prosecutors, while the investigation includes charges such as unauthorized access to information systems, violation of privacy and illegal exercise of the profession. In parallel, another line of investigation is related to fraud and abuse of office by former members of the secret services.
The investigation focuses on two main issues. The first concerns contracts between the Italian counterintelligence agency AISI and the company of entrepreneur Carmine Saladino, which between 2022 and 2024 received over 39 million euros for supplies such as signal-blocking devices (jammers), facial recognition software and surveillance systems. The second issue concerns illegal eavesdropping and espionage activities carried out by the “Squadra Fiore”.
Among those under investigation is the former deputy director of DIS, Giuseppe Del Deo, who is suspected of embezzling public funds worth around 5 million euros for contracts signed with a related company. Entrepreneur Saladino is also under investigation for fraud.
The list of suspects also includes Giuliano Tavaroli, former head of security at Pirelli-Telecom, previously implicated in the Telecom-Sismi scandal. According to the prosecution, he and other individuals are suspected of having created a criminal network that obtained and sold confidential information illegally obtained from protected state databases.
The group used sophisticated communications equipment and covert methods, including false identities and codenames, and worked with domestic and foreign clients. According to the charges, they prepared detailed dossiers on individuals and companies with sensitive data, as well as providing wiretapping and “cleaning” services from wiretapping devices.
Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic (Copasir) had previously requested documentation on this matter and is expected to receive materials that are no longer under investigative secrecy, while investigations continue to fully uncover this suspected network of espionage and data abuse.
