US President does not rule out direct meeting with Iranian officials, while hinting at possible deal

United States Vice President JD Vance, along with the American delegation participating in peace talks with Iran, have left for Pakistan and are expected to arrive within a few hours.

President Donald Trump stated this on Monday in an interview with the New York Post, adding that he is willing to meet with senior Iranian officials if progress is achieved in negotiations.

In another interview with Fox News, Trump went further, stating that a deal with Tehran could be signed "as soon as today."

" The talks are expected to take place ," Trump said, dismissing speculation that the negotiations had failed. " At this stage, I don't believe anyone is playing games ," he added.

The president confirmed that a high-level US delegation, including Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, is headed to Islamabad for the next round of talks.

" They're already on the way. They'll be there tonight ," Trump declared.

This development underscores the urgency of the negotiations, which take place just days before the end of the ceasefire between the US and Iran, at a time of heightened tension in the region.

Trump left open the possibility of a significant diplomatic move, stressing that he does not rule out a direct meeting with the Iranian leadership.

" I have no problem meeting them. If they want to meet, we have very capable people, but I have no problem meeting them ," he said.

According to him, the main US demand remains unchanged: Iran must abandon any efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

" Give up nuclear weapons. It's very simple. There will be no nuclear weapons," Trump said. He added that Iran could prosper if it met that condition. "Otherwise, it's a wonderful country, it could really become one ," he declared.

However, the US president did not provide details on the possible consequences if Tehran refuses to meet the demands or if the talks fail, especially on the eve of the end of the ceasefire.

" I don't want to go into details. You can imagine it yourself. It wouldn't be a good thing ," he said when asked about the possibility of escalating the measures.

Asked if the US knows who is representing Iran in the negotiations, Trump replied: "We have a pretty clear idea and we believe we are talking to the right people."
