Russia announced on November 26 that it has decided to expel a British diplomat, whom it accuses of espionage.
The Federal Security Service, (FSB), said the diplomat, whose photos were published by Russian media, had deliberately provided false information when he entered Russia.
" At the same time, the Russian FSB has found signs of the diplomat in question carrying out intelligence and subversive work that threatens the security of the Russian Federation ," the announcement said.
The British Foreign Office has not yet reacted, nor has the British Embassy in Moscow.
The news agency, TASS, quoted the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, as saying that the Russian Foreign Ministry has invited the British ambassador to the meeting.
According to the FSB, the British diplomat had gone to Russia to replace one of six UK diplomats expelled earlier this year who were also accused by Russian authorities of espionage.
Relations between Britain and Russia have deteriorated significantly since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine. Britain has imposed a series of rounds of sanctions on Russia and provided arms to Ukraine.
Moscow has said that last week, Ukraine for the first time attacked Russia with British Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Ukraine has also used American missiles, ATACMS, saying that attacks with these nuclear weapons were the reason why Moscow attacked Ukraine on November 21 with a new medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile./ REL
