French President Emmanuel Macron has warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against a ground offensive in Lebanon, highlighting the risk of further escalation in the region amid the ongoing war between the US, Israel and Iran.
In a statement after a phone call with Netanyahu, Macron said he had clearly called on the Israeli prime minister to preserve Lebanon's territorial integrity and refrain from a large-scale ground operation.
"I called on the Israeli prime minister to preserve the territorial integrity of Lebanon and to refrain from a ground offensive ," the French president said, adding that such an action would be a dangerous escalation and a strategic mistake.
Macron also spoke with Lebanon's president and prime minister today, calling on Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Shiite militia, to "immediately cease its attacks against Israel and beyond."
He stressed France's solidarity with the Lebanese people and commitment to regional stability, noting that France is sending the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to the Mediterranean to support maritime security.
Israel has carried out intensive airstrikes on Beirut and southern areas, causing dozens of civilian and military casualties, according to Lebanese authorities. Tensions on the Israel-Lebanon border have risen sharply since the start of the conflict with Iran, with Hezbollah firing missiles and drones into Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Iran's supreme leader and continued Israeli attacks. Israel has mobilized tens of thousands of reservists and has signaled that "all options are on the table," including a broader ground offensive.
Macron also criticized the initial US-Israeli attacks on Iran as "outside the framework of international law," stressing that France was not informed of or involved in them.
He called for a return to the previous ceasefire agreement and for restraint from all sides to avoid a wider regional war.
