Hamas launched a surprise attack in Israel and many have raised questions about how they managed to infiltrate the territory by taking hostages. It seems the answer is simple: through the tunnels.
"Necessity is the mother of invention," declared Hamas leader Khaled Meshal, a phrase referring precisely to the tunnels. Guerrillas, for more than twenty years, transformed them with three purposes: logistical, for obtaining combat material; defensive, to prevent any Israeli ground intervention; camouflage, to send commandos into the Jewish state while avoiding surveillance.

From simple tunnels originally built, they reached structures equipped with light and support columns, even 60-80 meters deep.
The Palestinians used them to capture soldiers, plant mines and target Israeli patrols. In 2014, the military discovered a passage with four motorcycles inside: they were supposed to be used for an infiltration aimed at kidnapping hostages. Mission on a smaller scale than what happened last Saturday. A tunnel "market" has also been created, with dedicated trafficking teams willing to rent them out and, possibly, now become Israeli prisoner cells.

Crisis after crisis have entered the list of Israel's main targets. Defense discovered over fifty of them thanks to information and the use of sophisticated tools. Sensors, seismographs and "secret" equipment aided the military as the Egyptians flooded areas on their side of the border with sewage. Some collapsed and some were artificially triggered, causing miners to die.

Jerusalem sought the cooperation of the US and then built an underground barrier about 60 kilometers long around Gaza to make life difficult for the diggers. They completed it in 2021, using 14,000 tons of cement, costing over a billion dollars. The Air Force, in the same period, used new systems to destroy a network of tunnels, important successes that were never final. Judging by the warning to citizens at these hours, the invisible gates are still open. / Corriere Della Sera
