A senior Hamas official says only a small number of senior commanders inside Gaza knew of the broad incursion into Israel, but that allies such as Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah "will join the fray if Gaza is subjected to a war of annihilation".
Ali Barakeh, a member of Hamas' exiled leadership, spoke to The Associated Press in his office in Beirut as Israel bombarded Gaza and vowed a total blockade of the Hamas-ruled territory.
"Only a handful of Hamas commanders knew about zero hour," Barakeh says, adding that no one from Hamas' central command or political bureau was in the Lebanese capital last week.
He acknowledges that Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group have aided Hamas in the past, but said that since the 2014 Gaza war, Hamas has produced its own rockets and trained its own fighters.
Meanwhile, Israel has secured the border with Gaza after militants breached the barrier at several different locations on Saturday.
No militants have crossed the fence, according to the Israeli military, over the past day.
Israel advised people to leave Gaza through the point controlled by Egypt. Later, the same said that the crossing point is closed.
About 900 people have lost their lives in Israel since Saturday's attacks. 260 of them are participants in a music festival. The Israeli army says it has found the bodies of 1,500 militants. Meanwhile, in Gaza, 690 people have been killed by airstrikes.
