'Mammoth' worth 2 billion euros, Poland signs agreement with the US

Poland and the United States will sign a deal worth about $2 billion to provide logistical support for Patriot anti-aircraft systems, Poland's defense minister announced today.

Poland is strengthening its defense capabilities, seeking to emerge as a key pillar of NATO's eastern flank against an aggressive Russia, while Donald Trump's US is increasingly showing its intentions to disengage from Europe.

"The security of Polish airspace has no price," Wladyslaw Kosyniak-Kamys said at a press conference, adding that missile defense and cooperation with the United States are a priority.

Kosignac-Khamis later confirmed to Reuters via text message that the contract is worth nearly $2 billion.

The agreement with the US concerns the provision of logistical support for the Patriot system within the Armed Forces and includes technical support as well as training.

The Polish Ministry of Defense stressed that the implementation of the agreement will enable the operational readiness of Patriot launchers, which form the basis of the Polish Army's Wisła program. It aims, among other things, to counter short-range tactical ballistic missiles, including cruise missiles.

Poland purchased the first two Patriot batteries from the US in 2018 under the Wisla program.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland is the highest spender among NATO countries in terms of defense spending relative to its GDP. In 2024, it spent 4.1% of GDP on defense and has pledged to increase the figure to 4.7% in 2025.

Polish President Andrzej Duda has proposed that a minimum defense spending of 4% of GDP be included in the Constitution.
