US President Donald Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin's offer to voluntarily maintain limits on deployed strategic nuclear weapons "sounds like a good idea."
The Kremlin has welcomed US President Donald Trump's comments on extending the New START nuclear treaty, which is due to expire on February 5, 2026, Reuters reports .
During a statement to the media, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed optimism about the US accepting the proposal.
US President Donald Trump said he was willing to accept Russian leader Vladimir Putin's request to extend the nuclear deal by a year.
"I think it's a good idea," Trump said from the White House, responding to reporters' question about Putin's offer.
The New START treaty, signed in 2010, limits the US and Russia to 1,550 nuclear warheads and 800 ballistic missiles and heavy bombers, including a joint verification system. However, inspections have been suspended for two years after Moscow suspended its participation following the start of the war in Ukraine.
This year, President Trump has said he wants to open denuclearization talks not only with Moscow but also with Beijing. He has also asked the Pentagon to develop a new missile defense system called “Golden Dome” as part of a strategy to strengthen American national security.
Although there is a possibility of extending the nuclear deal, tensions between the US and Russia remain high. Putin warned that sending US Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would destroy relations with Washington.
