Israel's war against Hamas could be halted for two months if negotiations are reached on a deal that would see dozens of hostages released, two senior US officials say.
They said the terms of the ongoing agreement will be developed in two phases.
In the first phase, women, the elderly and wounded prisoners will be released by Hamas while the fighting stops.
During this pause, Israel and Hamas will have to figure out the second phase in order for Israeli soldiers and civilians to be released.
In total, more than 100 hostages are expected to be released in the agreement.
The deal also calls for Israel to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza, as residents report "great suffering" due to a lack of food and a water pipeline running between Israel and the besieged strip.
US officials hope such an agreement could provide a lasting solution to the conflict.
