Just hours after Iran and the United States reached an initial ceasefire agreement, tensions have returned to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important maritime corridors for global oil transport.
Before the attack, Iran's Revolutionary Guard issued a direct warning to ships passing through the strait.
"If any ship attempts to transit the Strait without our permission... or outside the designated route, it is responsible for any consequences," the Garda announced.
Just hours later, according to a US official quoted by CNN, the Singapore-flagged container ship Ever Lovely was hit by an Iranian drone. This is the first attack on a ship since the signing of the US-Iran deal.
US President Donald Trump called the incident "a reckless violation of our Ceasefire Agreement."
Following the attack, the US military on Friday carried out strikes on Iranian military targets near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran, on the other hand, said it had targeted US military positions in the region, although a US official told CNN that the Iranian drones were identified and did not reach their targets.
Meanwhile, maritime authorities reported that a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was also hit by an "unidentified projectile," indicating that the situation in this strategic route remains extremely fragile.
Under the agreement reached between the US and Iran, Tehran has committed to using its "best efforts" to ensure the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. This was one of Iran's main commitments under the ceasefire.
However, the agreement does not imply Iran's relinquishment of control over the maritime corridor. The document stipulates that Iran and Oman will cooperate to "determine the future administration" of the Strait of Hormuz, giving Tehran a formal role in its management.
