Fraud worth 1.9 billion euros, former Wirecard manager under Putin's

According to an investigation by an international team of journalists, Jan Marsalek is said to be in Moscow. He is also reported to have been involved in the war in Ukraine...

He is reported to be in the metropolis of Moscow, apparently supported by the Russian regime of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.

The case concerns former Wirecard manager Jan Marsalek, who is wanted on an international arrest warrant.

According to Der Spiegel and ZDF, an international team of journalists has found the Austrian in the Russian capital.

As early as April 2022, former Wirecard board member Marsalek was reported to be in Moscow. Bild reported at the time that he was suspected of being involved with a group of paramilitary mercenaries and also had excellent contacts in Austria.

Marsalek, 45, was born in Vienna and grew up in Klosterneuburg, not far from the Danube metropolis.

He is considered the main suspect in the so-called Wirecard scandal. The bankrupt financial services provider once conducted its dubious business dealings from Aschheim near Munich.

The alleged accounting fraud is said to involve at least 1.9 billion euros. Marsalek has been on the run from German prosecutors since June 2020.

The Munich public prosecutor's office is accusing him of fraud with commercial gangs, accounting fraud and a particularly serious case of breach of trust.

As Der Spiegel and ZDF have now reported, Marsalek has been seen in Moscow with a woman. He is said to have undergone, among other things, a hair transplant to improve his appearance. He was also reportedly present during Putin's war in Ukraine.

For example, he is said to have visited the Crimean peninsula on the Black Sea several times. And apparently, he was on the Russian-Ukrainian front, according to reports. Shared photos reportedly show him in combat gear.

Marsalek is said to have repeatedly visited the FSB intelligence headquarters in Moscow. As BR24 reports, Marsalek is suspected of having collaborated with Russia's domestic intelligence agency, the FSB, for some time.

According to BR, the Munich public prosecutor's office filed a so-called request for legal assistance in Moscow in the spring of 2022, requesting the extradition of the accused. However, so far, this attempt has apparently been unsuccessful. /Adapted from Pamphlet/
