An end to the war in Ukraine is still not in sight. Vladimir Putin expressed his willingness to negotiate with Donald Trump, but then took no action. Now, one of Putin's most trusted, once closest, people has resigned from his post in the Kremlin. This leads to some rather bitter conclusions.
The case concerns Dmitry Kozak. He was one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest associates for many years. According to official statements from Moscow, he is leaving the Kremlin administration. His indirect successor in Putin's regime has likely already been determined.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Interfax news agency that he could confirm Kozak's resignation. He was leaving his post as deputy head of the presidential administration "at his own request," Peskov said. According to a report by the RBK news portal, he is planning to enter the business world.
Born in what is now Ukraine, Kosak worked in the St. Petersburg city administration under Putin in the 1990s. He later followed his boss to Moscow, into the government and into the Kremlin. Kosak was responsible for important reforms in the administration and judiciary during Putin’s first term in office. Later, he led the Russian delegation for many years in negotiations over the fate of Ukraine’s eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
With the outbreak of war, Putin's confidant disappeared from view. Independent Russian media, such as the website Meduza, reported that he was the only member of Putin's inner circle to speak out against the war with Ukraine and was forced to take a minor official position.
This year, he reportedly tried again to persuade Putin to engage in genuine peace negotiations and internal reforms. There is no official information about any differences of opinion between the two politicians. There is also no information yet on the reasons for Kosak's voluntary departure.
It is thought that Putin's unwillingness to actually work towards ending the war could be one of the possible reasons.
One thing is certain: one of the few opponents of the invasion of Ukraine in the Kremlin is finally leaving.
