During Donald Trump's eight-month presidency, his wife Melania's presence at official events has been rare. However, during her recent official visit to the United Kingdom, the US first lady was photographed in five different looks, each of which sparked discussion and revealed a carefully planned fashion strategy.
Since King Charles invited Donald Trump for a second state visit in February, Melania has planned her outfit choices with meticulous precision. Every outfit, from her classic Burberry coat to the bright yellow dress she wore to the state dinner, was the result of a collaboration with her personal stylist, Herve Pierre.
Although diplomatic authenticity usually dictates strict choices, Melania chose to express her personality. The Burberry long coat, with a retro style from the 2020 collection under the artistic direction of Riccardo Tisci, was combined with black leather Christian Dior boots, transforming it into a bold fashion statement.
Then, upon arriving at Windsor Castle, Melania donned a chic couture suit by Italian fashion maestro Maria Grazia Chiuri, a former Dior womenswear designer. While many attributed the look to new creative director JW Anderson, it was clear that Melania preferred his predecessor's style, which is characterized by feminine, curvy lines.
The outfit was a modern take on the iconic Christian Dior suit, custom-made for her and obviously at a high cost. Its cool gray color was combined with a purple hat by Stephen Jones, which covered most of her face, protecting her from prying eyes and the flashes of photographers. This is not the first time she has chosen a hat with a brim to somewhat "hide" from the public eye, choosing to isolate her gaze.
However, the highlight of the visit was the dress she chose for the official dinner at St George's Hall in Windsor. A bright yellow off-the-shoulder crepe gown designed by American Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera, which she paired with a purple satin belt and emerald earrings.
This choice, unusual for royal protocols and the formal atmosphere of Britain, caused strong reactions in the fashion world. However, Melania seemed to ignore the criticism, expressing self-confidence and independence, showing that she acts without considering the opinions of third parties.
Melania managed to make a unique impression on those in attendance, including the young Princess of Wales, who caught her husband's eye. The visit concluded with her presence at events such as a tour of Queen Mary's Dollhouse and a meeting with Girl Scouts at Frogmore Gardens, where she opted for a more modest but elegant outfit by Ralph Lauren.
Melania Trump's stance underscores that fashion for her is a means of expressing personal identity and power, regardless of diplomatic stereotypes or local preferences.
Trump's visit to London was not only an opportunity for the United Kingdom to showcase its cultural and royal heritage, but also an opportunity for the US First Lady to assert her autonomy.
