The math of hunger in Gaza is simple. Palestinians can't leave, the war has ended agriculture, and Israel has banned fishing, so virtually every calorie its population consumes must be brought in from abroad.
Israel knows how much food is needed. It has calibrated the hunger in Gaza for decades, initially calculating deliveries to exert pressure and avoid starvation.

“The idea is to put the Palestinians on a diet, but not starve them,” a senior adviser to then-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said in 2006. An Israeli court ordered the release of documents detailing those macabre sums two years later.
Cogat, the Israeli agency that still controls aid deliveries to Gaza, calculated then that Palestinians needed a minimum average of 2,279 calories per person per day, which could be provided through 1,836 kg of food.
Today, humanitarian organizations are calling for an even smaller minimum ration: 62,000 metric tons of dry and canned food to meet the basic needs of 2.1 million people each month, or about 1 kg of food per person per day.
As Gaza has descended into famine this summer, Israeli officials have variously denied the existence of mass starvation, claimed without evidence that Hamas steals and hoards aid, or blamed the famine on UN distribution failures, sharing photos of pallets of aid waiting to be collected across the border.
They pointed to the deadly and chaotic food distributions by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a logistics startup backed by the US and Israel, as proof that Palestinians had access to food.
However, data collected and published by the Israeli government itself makes it clear that Gaza has been starving. Between March and June, Israel allowed only 56,000 tons of food into the territory, Cogat data shows, less than a quarter of Gaza's minimum needs for that period.
Even if every bag of UN flour had been collected and distributed, and the GHF had developed secure systems for equitable distribution, famine was inevitable. The Palestinians did not have enough to eat.

In Gaza, the only obstacles to getting aid across the border are restrictions imposed by Israel, an ally of many Western countries, including Britain, and armed with British and American weapons.
Two Israeli-based human rights groups declared this week that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza, with reports citing evidence that included the weaponization of hunger. B'Tselem described an "official and openly stated policy" of mass starvation.
The Israeli government knows how much food the people of Gaza need to survive and how much food goes into the territory, and in the past it used this data to calculate how much food was needed to avoid starvation.
The huge gap between the calories Gaza needs and the food that has been flowing in since March makes it clear that Israeli officials are making different calculations today. They cannot shift the blame for this man-made famine to anyone else, and neither can their allies. /Adapted from The Guardian/
