Taking to the streets to hold politicians accountable has become a key feature of its democracy since the 1990 Granite Revolution that preceded independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the 2004 Orange Revolution and the 2014 Maidan Revolution.
In Ukraine, the banner symbolizes equal power to the President, and Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed this in recent days. The Generation Z-led protests that forced Zelensky to reverse his stance on a controversial bill that would have seen the country’s top independent anti-corruption body placed under political control were marked by creative and provocative banners in cities across Ukraine.
More than 69 percent of Ukrainians supported the protests, according to the latest findings from Gradus Research Company, based on a poll of 1,000 respondents conducted from July 25-26. Creative wartime protest banners, quoting songs, pop culture and literature references, and occasionally using explicit language, by groups of people mostly between the ages of 15 and 23, lifted the morale of the exhausted population and even boosted morale on the front lines.
"I have been complaining for a long time that the motivation to fight has disappeared somewhere. But I want to thank Mr. President, if it weren't for the bad things that these idiots decided to organize, I wouldn't have seen what wonderful children have grown up in Ukraine. It's worth fighting for them. They have increased the motivation," said Ukrainian soldier Oleksii Tsymbaliuk.

Now, Ukraine is experiencing a so-called cardboard revolution, fueled by young people who grew up in a country already on the path to EU integration while immersed in TikTok, Ukrainian and Western pop culture and literature. POLITICO documented some of the most creative (and profane) banners that dominated the last week of protests that ultimately intimidated Zelensky.
“This is really a very creative and well-read protest. It is within the tradition of Ukrainian revolutions. For example, the Orange Revolution of 2004 was also very theatrical in itself, but the protesters there played with colors, not with quotes ,” said Olesia Ostrovska-Liuta, general director of the National Complex of Culture, Art and Museum “Mystetskyi Arsenal.”

Të dyja koordinatoret e protestës në Kiev, 23-vjeçaret Zinaida Averina dhe Anastasia Bezpalko, mbanin bluza me mbishkrimin: “Njerëzit me kartona janë burimi i pushtetit”, ndërsa folën me POLITICO një ditë para se Zelensky të nënshkruante me shpejtësi një projektligj që rivendoste pavarësinë e Byrosë Kombëtare Kundër Korrupsionit të Ukrainës (NABU) dhe Zyrës Speciale të Prokurorit Kundër Korrupsionit (SAP).
Pas tubimit të parë, protestuesit krijuan grupe në Telegram për të koordinuar rolet: kush do të lidhej me policinë dhe mjekët. Kush do të sillte shënjues, karton, ujë dhe mushama.
Averina, Bezpalko dhe një koordinatore e tretë, Sofia Pivtorak, janë të diplomuar në Akademinë Kyiv Mohyla dhe Akademinë Ukrainase të Lidershipit.
“Mendoj se brezi ynë është shumë reaktiv dhe i lirë në veprimet e tij. Ne duam të tregojmë se kemi edhe një zë për të thënë se nuk është në rregull të anulohet pavarësia e NABU-së dhe SAP-it. Kjo na u trashëgua brez pas brezi. Në familjen time, ne flisnim për revolucionet e së kaluarës, kështu që për mua ishte e natyrshme të bashkohesha me këtë protestë”, tha Pivtorak.
Sa i përket tabelave prej kartoni dhe gjuhës eksplicite, Averina tha se ato vijnë kryesisht nga kultura pop ukrainase. Dhe na është përcjellë nga brezi i mijëvjeçarëve.
“Shumë kartona janë citate nga filma dhe këngë, kështu që është një lloj gjëje kulturore. Si nga këngët e (poetit dhe shkrimtarit ukrainas) Serhii Zhadan dhe (grupit muzikor) Kurgan dhe Agregat”, shtoi ajo.
Memet dhe shakatë i ndihmuan protestuesit të përballonin reagimin e ashpër në mediat sociale dhe përpjekjet e disa politikanëve të huaj, si kongresmenja republikane amerikane Marjorie Taylor Greene, për të përdorur protestat për të minuar Zelensky-n.
“Në asnjë mënyrë ne nuk mbështesim rrëzimin e qeverisë, ne mbështesim reformën kundër korrupsionit dhe mbrojtjen e asaj për të cilën ka luftuar revolucioni i EuroMaidanit”, tha Averina.
Pasi parlamenti rivendosi pavarësinë e organeve antikorrupsion, protestuesit tani planifikojnë të vazhdojnë tubimet, këtë herë duke kërkuar reforma shtesë të nevojshme për integrimin e Ukrainës në BE dhe për të siguruar ndihmën e huaj thelbësore për përpjekjet e saj të luftës.
