French authorities have opened a preliminary investigation into former Culture Minister Jack Lang, regarding his relationship with American financier Jeffrey Epstein, involved in one of the biggest international scandals in recent years.
The investigation is related to suspicions of "laundering proceeds from tax fraud" and comes after the publication of United States Department of Justice files, in which Lang's name is mentioned about 700 times.
According to French authorities, the investigation aims to clarify possible financial and administrative links between Jack Lang, his family members and Jeffrey Epstein. American files suggest relationships that include favorable services, such as the use of Epstein's car and private jet, as well as frequent contacts.
However, authorities have stressed that neither Jack Lang nor his daughter, Caroline Lang, are suspected of involvement in sex crimes.
Jack Lang, 86, currently president of the Arab World Institute in Paris, has dismissed the allegations as "baseless." In a statement to AFP, he said the investigation would help clarify issues that he said were unfairly questioning his honor and integrity.
Lang has stated that he met Epstein about 15 years ago, through actor Woody Allen, describing Epstein as a person "passionate about art and culture."
His daughter, Caroline Lang, 64, who last week resigned as president of the French Syndicate of Film Producers, is also involved in the investigation.
She has stated that she was "extremely naive" in her relationship with Epstein and has denied any personal financial gain.
The preliminary investigation is ongoing and French authorities are expected to analyze financial documentation and suspected contacts to determine whether there are elements of a criminal offense. Up to this stage, it is a matter of verifying facts and not formally filing charges.
