No one wins from this deal, but at least there is hope for thousands of starving Palestinians...
What seemed impossible until yesterday happened: Hamas accepted the peace plan proposed by Donald Trump and, in a sudden turn of events, the US president himself welcomed this stance of the Islamic militia, asking Israel to stop military actions "immediately".
According to Israeli Channel 12, the move caught Prime Minister Netanyahu by surprise, as he was faced with a fait accompli without first consulting Hamas about its response. This limited his ability to sabotage the negotiation process again, as had happened before.
According to the plan, all Israeli hostages will be released in a single phase, along with the bodies of the dead. But Hamas has demanded as a precondition a halt to the Israeli offensive and the creation of conditions for this to be realized. In response, Israel has suspended operations to occupy the last part of Gaza and has switched to a defensive posture.
However, to ensure the security of the implementation of the agreement, a new round of negotiations for a more detailed agreement is expected. So far, no elements are foreseen that could undo what has been achieved, but the situation requires vigilance.
For Palestinians, this is a moment of relief after months of relentless bombardment, although sporadic Israeli army attacks are still reported, and a window of hope for humanitarian aid that has been limited to a minimum.
By now, the scenario was familiar: a peace proposal, approval by Hamas with some conditions, then sabotage by Netanyahu. But this time, experience has convinced Hamas and the Arab-Muslim countries to accept the plan without major additional demands, so as not to miss a rare opportunity to stop the bloodshed.
Russia and China, which have significant influence in the region and close ties to the Palestinians, have also been involved in this process. Both have expressed support for the American plan, which was initially modified by Netanyahu to make it unacceptable to Hamas, but this effort also failed.
The plan, despite its vacuum, has been accepted as a way out of the impasse. However, its biggest shortcoming is the lack of guarantees for a lasting peace and the future of the Palestinian state.
Analyst Meron Rapaport, for “+972 Magazine”, writes that, although the plan has many problems, it represents the end of the illusion of the total expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza by the Israeli government. According to him, if the agreement is implemented, it will stop the genocide, stop the destruction of Gaza, allow humanitarian aid, release all Israeli hostages and thousands of Palestinian prisoners, and end a senseless and criminal war for both sides.
The key points of the plan are similar to all ceasefire negotiations that have been underway since October 2023: the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for a cessation of hostilities and the release of Palestinian prisoners, a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the relinquishment of power by Hamas, and the entry of a multinational security force with the involvement of several Arab states.
According to Rapaport, this is not a victory for Hamas, especially after over 100,000 Palestinian deaths and the destruction of most of Gaza's cities, but it is also not a victory for Israel, and especially not for Netanyahu and his allies who had publicly declared their intention to "cleanse" Gaza of the Palestinian population.
According to an official Israeli plan published after October 7, the entire population of Gaza, over 2.3 million people, was planned to be evacuated, and the army had begun to demolish entire neighborhoods to prevent the return of the displaced. This operational model was concretized in the so-called “Generals’ Plan”, implemented since the end of 2024.
Trump, with his plan, clearly forbids this scenario. According to Rapaport, the reversal of Netanyahu spokespeople’s stance, from enthusiasm for total expulsion to support for a deal that excludes it, stems not only from the reelection campaign, but also from a belated recognition that such a mass expulsion is unsustainable and practically impossible.
"The time of 'miracles', according to Tel Aviv's sick fantasies, to finally eradicate Palestinians from Gaza, is over. Ruined but enduring, the Gazans are still there," he writes.
Many unknowns remain for the future, including the risk of a new conflict, but for today, after so many horrors, stopping the genocide seems like a small human victory. The term “lasting peace” that Trump uses may seem excessive; perhaps it would be more realistic to speak of a “final interim peace.”
Meanwhile, analysts warn that this pause in Gaza could serve the US and Israel to prepare for another war, this time perhaps against Iran. /Adapted by "Pamphlet" from "Inside Over"
