"They beat me and threatened my family", Nikola Sandulović confesses

I was kidnapped by members of the Serbian secret police, who beat, tortured, humiliated me and threatened to kill me and my family.

The leader of the Serbian Republican Party, Nikola Sandulović, who apologized for crimes against ethnic Albanians, has spoken for the first time since his release from detention.

He was released from custody after suffering what he calls a horrific ordeal in which Belgrade's secret services beat, tortured, humiliated and threatened him.

Nikola Sandulovic, the leader of the Serbian Republican Party, said he was taken from his home 10 days ago and subjected to violent abuse for more than six hours by the intelligence service. As a result, his lawyers say, he remains paralyzed on his left side and is suffering from nerve damage.

Speaking for the first time since his release, Sandulović said in a statement on Wednesday, he recounted the horrors he endured for about six hours under the terror of BIA agents.

"I was kidnapped by members of the Serbian secret police, who beat me, tortured me, humiliated me and threatened to kill me and my family for more than six hours, endangering not only my health but also my life. All this because of my political expression and the act of placing flowers on the grave of a murdered seven-year-old girl, who belonged to the Jashari family ", confessed the Serbian oppositionist.

Sandulović has been charged with violating laws prohibiting incitement to national, racial and religious hatred. The charges arose after he apologized for crimes committed by Serbs against ethnic Albanians during Kosovo's war for independence in 1998 and 1999.

He has been severely criticized by the pro-government media for reposting a video of a visit he made to the grave of Adem Jashari, founder of the Kosovo Liberation Army, who was killed by the Serbian police in 1998 along with 57 members of his family. his.

Sandulović said that after the attack, the secret service sent him home. Immediately after, he added, the police arrived with an order to take him to prison. Instead, Sandulovic said he was taken to the emergency center as his condition was critical.

Giving a first-hand account of the incident, which has sparked fears for democracy in Serbia, the opposition politician said he was subsequently transferred to a prison hospital and sentenced to concurrent "unjust detention of 30 days". putting his life at risk.

The Security Intelligence Agency (BIA) has acknowledged the interrogation of Sandulović, but, in a statement to the Financial Times, it has stated that he was not subjected to any unlawful use of physical force or violation of his freedom and rights.

" The BIA only wanted to clarify the context of Sandulović's illegal actions, which the competent prosecutor classified as a criminal offense ... inciting national, racial and religious hatred and intolerance ," the response said.

The service denied reports that its agents had beaten him, saying the allegations were aimed at destabilizing the country.

The Serbian government has been approached for comment, but there has been no response yet. Sandulović's release came after opposition parties in Serbia were fueled by a debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg over allegations that recent elections were rigged in favor of President Aleksandar Vucic's SNS, a charge that Vucic denies./ Adapted " Pamphlet" from " The Guardian"
