Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei told ABC News on Saturday that Iran's President and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are " safe and well ."
"Iran's government system is functioning normally," Baghaei said in his interview, denying speculation about the death or injury of key leaders following the massive joint US-Israeli airstrikes carried out this morning.
The statement comes in direct contradiction to claims by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who in a video statement said that "there are many signs" that Supreme Leader Khamenei "is no longer with us."
Netanyahu added that the attacks destroyed Khamenei's compound and eliminated senior Revolutionary Guard commanders, nuclear program officials and other key regime figures, suggesting that the objective is to overthrow the ayatollahs' regime.
Netanyahu's claims have not been officially confirmed by independent sources, and Iran has not released any new footage of Khamenei today. However, other Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, have previously said the supreme leader is alive.
