The Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has commented on the recent statements of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, expressing surprise at their softer tone towards Russia.
In a reaction published on his channel on the Max platform, Medvedev said he was surprised by the positions of the two politicians, who, according to him, have departed from the dominant European Union rhetoric about a "Russian threat", instigated by Brussels.
"The 'European peacemakers' took me by surprise. What is happening? Are they finally walking the path of reason, or have the Christmas holidays already begun?" Medvedev wrote in ironic tones.
Medvedev's statements come at a time of continued tensions between Russia and the West, while some European officials appear to be signaling a more cautious assessment of the risk of a direct military escalation.
