More details have emerged from the serious incident that shook Modena, where a car at high speed plowed into pedestrians in the city center, injuring several people, while its driver then attempted to attack citizens with a knife while fleeing.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reacted after the event, stating that she is following developments with "maximum attention" and that she is in constant contact with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and security authorities.
" What happened today in Modena, where a man hit several pedestrians and then allegedly attacked a passerby with a knife, is extremely serious ," Meloni wrote on social media.
She expressed solidarity with the injured and their families, while thanking the citizens who intervened to stop the perpetrator.
" I thank the citizens who bravely intervened to stop the perpetrator and the law enforcement agencies for their response ," the Italian Prime Minister declared.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Modena, Massimo Mezzetti, said that the investigations are still in the initial stages and no leads are being ruled out.
" We need to understand the nature of this event, but it is a dramatic and very serious act. If it turns out to be an assassination, then it would be even more serious ," he declared from the scene.
According to preliminary evidence, the car driven by a person of North African origin intentionally drove onto the sidewalk, hit a bicycle and then ran over a woman, who was left in very serious condition with crushed legs.
After the accident, the perpetrator got out of the car with a cold weapon in his hand and attempted to hit people who were trying to stop him.
Four citizens chased him, knocked him to the ground, and held him in neutral until the police arrived.
" They showed courage and high civic sense ," declared Mayor Mezzetti.
Italian police have detained the perpetrator and are questioning him to clarify the motives of the incident, while the area of the incident remains isolated for further investigations.
