The French ambassador in Niger is taken hostage, Paris is alerted

French President Emmanuel Macron said that under Niger's new military administration, France's ambassador has effectively been "taken hostage".

"In Nigeria, as I speak, we have an ambassador and diplomatic members who have literally been taken hostage in the French Embassy," Macron said during a visit to the northwestern town of Semur-en-Auxois, according to broadcaster BFMTV.

He added that as Niger's leaders do not allow new supplies into the embassy compound, the ambassador is forced to eat only military rations.

Niger was plunged into turmoil on July 26 when General Abdourahamane Tchiani, a former commander of the presidential guard, led a military intervention that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

In late August, Niger's military administration ordered the expulsion of French ambassador Sylvain Itte, but Paris rejected the order.

Military administrations also took power in neighboring Burkina Faso in 2022 and Mali in 2020.
