Poland has responded to the decision of the European Commission not to extend the ban on imports of Ukrainian grain, deciding to extend this veto from midnight today.
Farmers in Ukraine's five neighboring countries have repeatedly complained of a glut of produce that is hitting their domestic prices and pushing them into bankruptcy.
The fact that Ukraine brings grain to Europe at a cheaper price, due to the ongoing war, has destroyed the markets of many farmers in neighboring countries.
The countries, with the exception of Bulgaria, had pushed for an extension of the ban that expired today. Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania earlier said they could extend the restrictions unilaterally, while Bulgaria on Thursday voted to lift the restrictions.
Speaking to journalists, the country's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that this action is being taken to protect Polish farmers.
" We will extend this ban despite their disagreement, despite the European Commission's disagreement. We will do it because it is in the interest of the Polish farmer ," he said.
