Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides told reporters that Iran “asked us to convey a message to Israel,” according to the Cyprus Mail. “We will do it,” he said, adding that he had scheduled a phone call today with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"The role of the Republic of Cyprus in the region, I want to reiterate, as well as our characteristic, is that we will talk to everyone and to as many as possible... we are trying to convey messages, to create the conditions to end this difficult situation," he says.
"Today I will speak with the Prime Minister of Israel, a meeting that was planned for last night, but due to the chaotic situation it could not take place. I will speak with the President of Egypt and the President of the European Commission.
Our goal is to put an end to this situation that leads to no results, does not lead to the resolution of any dispute.
"From there, in view of the G7 Summit to be held in Canada, I asked the President of the European Council, who will represent the EU together with the President of the European Commission, to raise the issue at this important Summit, while at the same time, I want to say it publicly, I also expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the EU was slow in reacting," said the Cypriot President.
At the same time, a second round of tensions is unfolding on the Israel-Iran axis, with both sides exchanging fire and attacks.
Iran launched overnight attacks on Israeli cities using drones and missiles. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its space force launched a "massive" wave of missiles and drones at Israel as part of the military operation True Promise-3 in retaliation for the Israeli attacks.
For its part, Israel announced that it was targeting the Defense Ministry in Tehran.
US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Tehran today that any attack on the United States would provoke an overwhelming military response on an unprecedented scale. He also made it clear that the United States had no involvement.
"The United States had absolutely nothing to do with the attack on Iran. If we are attacked by Iran, in any way or shape, the full power and might of the United States Armed Forces will come down upon you at levels you have never seen before. However, we can easily reach an agreement between Iran and Israel and end this bloody conflict!" Trump warned.
