Pakistan's Defense Minister: Nuclear war could start at any moment

The bitter conflict between India and Pakistan is escalating. Pakistan's prime minister has called an emergency meeting of the National Command Authority, responsible for overseeing the country's nuclear arsenal.

This is the first publicly known meeting of the NCA since February 2019, which comes as Pakistan intensifies its counter-offensive as part of Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos.

Pakistan's military operation is called "Bunyanun Marsoos," a term derived from the Quran that means "strong and united structure." Pakistan's information minister said on social media that the operation was carried out with special care to avoid civilian casualties, exclusively targeting military installations previously used for attacks against Pakistan.

Nuclear war warning

A nuclear war could break out "at any moment" if India continues to launch attacks, Pakistan's defense chief warned at the same time.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif made the stark warning in an interview with Pakistan's Geo News television channel, as tensions between the two nuclear powers reach an extreme point.

The minister said that “if they impose a total war on the region and if there is a risk of confrontation, then a nuclear war could start at any time.”

"If they escalate - there is a possibility of a war in which both sides could use nuclear weapons - then the responsibility for that will fall on India," he added.

Pakistan's prime minister earlier accused India of stirring up "hell" in the region after overnight attacks on Pakistani soil and gave his military permission to launch a missile strike in retaliation.

A nuclear war in the region could kill 125 million people, and the world is calling on both sides to take a step back from the brink.

At the same time, India's Ministry of Civil Aviation issued a series of notices to pilots (NOTAMs) announcing the temporary closure of 32 airports in the north and west of the country to all civil flights.

The restrictive measures will be in effect from May 9 to 14 and will apply in the Indian states of Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat, as well as in Indian-administered Kashmir.
