Mystery surrounding a French Air Force military plane over Greenland: instead of landing, it suddenly deviated from course!
A French military Airbus A400M took off from Istres Air Base in southern France at 08:05 (German time). It then flew a circular path over Munich and Hamburg, before continuing on to Denmark. There, the French plane circled and then escorted a Danish Air Force Bombardier aircraft to Greenland.
But then something unusual happened: first, the French plane circled several times over the southeastern area of Greenland, near the island of Kulusuk, and then turned around completely, heading rapidly towards continental Europe. A wave of speculation immediately began in Greenland: did the French dare not land?
It is worth noting that Denmark, after conducting its own military flights, has switched to transporting troops using civilian aircraft. Allied troops, whom Copenhagen has invited to Greenland for exercises and reconnaissance missions, are also traveling on civilian aircraft. The Germans, for example, are using a Polish charter plane.
The first French soldiers landed on Wednesday evening on a Hercules military aircraft of the Danish Air Force.
One possible explanation is related to US threats against countries that oppose US policy on Greenland. Shortly after the French plane was turned back, US President Donald Trump (79) harshly attacked opponents of his plans for the Danish island at the White House. Trump declared: "I may impose tariffs on countries that do not cooperate on Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security."
Meanwhile, Germany had initially announced on Wednesday evening that it would transport 15 soldiers to Greenland with a German Air Force Airbus A400M.
However, just a few hours later, on Thursday, plans changed: the soldiers first flew to Denmark by military aircraft and then traveled to Nuuk on a Polish charter flight operated by Enter Airlines.
According to the newspaper BILD, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (65, SPD) did not want to unnecessarily provoke the US by landing a military plane in Greenland.
Now it is reported that France has also decided not to send a second contingent of its troops to Greenland by military aircraft (the first arrived on Wednesday evening). However, Paris reportedly wanted to demonstrate its presence by flying an A400M aircraft over the island.
French President Emmanuel Macron (48) declared just a day ago that France would send "additional land, air and naval forces" to Greenland in the coming days.
He gave the speech at the same air base from which the A400M took off. It is possible that the flight was also a refueling exercise, although it remains unclear which aircraft was involved in this process.
