US President Donald Trump told reporters that he was the one who convinced himself to suspend military action against Iran. He said that one of the reasons he called off the strikes was because Tehran announced it was canceling planned executions of detained protesters.
" Nobody convinced me. I convinced myself ," Trump told reporters at the White House as he departed for Florida, when asked if US allies in the Middle East had helped prevent him from ordering attacks.
CNN reported on Thursday that an intense lobbying campaign by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, along with a phone call to Trump from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, preceded his decision to hold off on taking action.
Trump was also focused on the planned executions and said the decision to halt them influenced his way of thinking.
" They were going to hang over 800 people yesterday and I respect the fact that they canceled it ," Trump told CNN.
