US President Donald Trump has said he is considering imposing new tariffs on countries that oppose his plans to annex Greenland, directly linking the issue to US national security.

During a White House event focused on healthcare, Trump said tariffs could be used as a tool to pressure countries that disagree with his ambition for the strategic Arctic island.

" I can put tariffs on countries if they don't agree with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security ," Trump declared, noting that tariffs have been a tool he has used on other occasions to force cooperation from foreign countries, including efforts to lower drug prices in the US.

Trump's push to take control of Greenland has sparked outrage among European nations, who fear the move could erode long-standing transatlantic ties. Some have begun sending troops to the semi-autonomous Arctic island that is currently a Danish territory.

But for the White House, the relocation of troops from several European NATO countries to Greenland has no impact on President Donald Trump's attempt to annex the Danish territory.

"I don't think the troops in Europe influence the president's decision-making process, nor do they influence his intention to buy Greenland at all ," said White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt.

The White House also made it clear that the president sees the purchase of Greenland as a national security priority.

Representatives from Greenland and Denmark visited the White House this week with some vague meetings about Trump's plans.

Meanwhile, a bipartisan delegation of US senators, including Senators Chris Coons, Thom Tillis, Jeanne Shaheen and Dick Durbin, is expected to meet with Danish and Greenlandic government and business leaders in Copenhagen today.

The delegation visits Greenland at a time when President Donald Trump has made clear his desire for the US to take over the Arctic territory. The push has been criticized by lawmakers across the board, and 75% of Americans say they oppose the idea./ Pamphlet
