The Francis Scott Key Bridge in the US city of Baltimore collapsed in the early morning hours of March 26 after being hit by a container ship.
An audio recording of a call between Maryland Transportation Authority Dispatch and Response officers has been released, showing the tense moments just before and immediately after the tragic collapse.
Before the ship hit the bridge, crew members issued a call that allowed officers minutes before the tragic accident to block passage on the bridge to save as many lives as possible. However, a construction crew fixing the potholes could not escape in time.
Six workers have been declared dead and efforts to find their bodies are ongoing. The effort to quickly close the overpass was intended to prevent as many cars as possible, officials said.
The audio transcript released by Broadcastify, from a Maryland Transportation Authority Police channel, reveals how officers responded to the call and successfully made a traffic stop.
Conversation between them:
Speaker 1: I need one of you guys on the south side, one of you guys on the north side, hold all the traffic on the Key Bridge. A ship that just lost direction is approaching. So until they get it under control, we have to stop all traffic.
Speaker 2 : I'm on my way to the south side.
Speaker 3 : I'm holding up traffic right now. I was driving, but we stopped before the bridge, so I'm going to stop all outside traffic.
Speaker 1: 10-4, is there a crew working on the bridge now?
Speaker 4 : (inaudible)
Speaker 4 : Do you want me to stop traffic along this side now?
Speaker 1 : Yes, if we can stop the traffic, just make sure no one is on the bridge now. Not sure where the crew is up there. Notify the foreman, see if we can get them off the bridge temporarily.
Speaker 4 : 10-4, as soon as the other unit gets here, I'll go up to the bridge. I have stopped all internal traffic at this time.
Speaker 4 : Once you get here, I'm going to alert the workers on the bridge and then stop the outside traffic.
Speaker 5 : C-13 Dispatch, the whole bridge just collapsed! (inaudible), anyone.. everyone… the whole bridge just collapsed.
Speaker 1 : Do we know if all traffic has stopped?
Speaker 4 : I can't get to the other side, sir, the bridge is down. We're going to have to get someone on the other side in Anne Arundel County, MSP to get up here and stop northbound traffic on the bridge.
Speaker 5 : C13, I'm holding all northbound traffic
