A NATO fighter jet shot down a drone suspected of Ukrainian origin on Tuesday after it entered Estonian airspace, Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur confirmed to the Delfi news portal.
According to Pevkur, the drone was identified in Estonian airspace and neutralized by fighter jets of the Baltic Air Patrol mission over Lake Vorciev.
"The drone incident is over for the time being," the minister declared.
Reuters reported that this is the latest in a series of airspace violations in the border region with Russia. Since March, several Ukrainian military drones have entered the airspace of NATO member states, including Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
The incident comes at a sensitive time for regional security. Last week, Latvia's prime minister resigned following criticism over the country's handling of similar incidents in its airspace.
NATO has not yet officially reacted to the incident in Estonia.
