This is happening too! Musk joins the call between Trump and India's Modi
Elon Musk

Elon Musk has participated in a phone call with President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an unusual move in a conversation between two heads of state during a war crisis.

Musk's involvement, confirmed by two US officials, suggests that the world's richest man has returned to better relations with the president. The two had a falling out last summer after the billionaire left the government, where he was tasked with reducing the workforce. In recent months, their relationship has appeared to have improved.

The US officials asked to remain anonymous as they were not authorized to speak publicly.

It is not clear why Musk was on the call or whether he spoke. His companies have received significant investment from sovereign wealth funds in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Musk has also long sought a larger commercial presence in India. Meanwhile, SpaceX, his private rocket company, is considering an initial public offering later this year, which could be affected by worsening global economic conditions.

According to American and Indian officials, the call focused on the escalating crisis in the Middle East, particularly over the Iranian military's control of the Strait of Hormuz, a key point for global oil and gas transportation. The disruption of maritime traffic in the area has caused rising energy prices and volatility in global markets. Several Asian countries are close to restricting fuel supplies.

"Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the entire world. We agreed to remain in touch to strive for peace and stability," Modi wrote on social media.

Neither government mentioned Musk's participation in official communications.

Although he helped elect Trump and played a role in reducing federal bureaucracy last year, Musk does not hold a government position. Early in the administration, he held the title of “special government employee” while leading a group known as DOGE, which aimed to reduce federal spending and structures, which caused tensions with other senior officials.

Musk did not respond to requests for comment, while the White House declined to comment on his involvement.

"President Trump has a very good relationship with Prime Minister Modi and this was a productive conversation," said White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt.

It is relatively rare for the White House to include private citizens in conversations between state leaders due to the sensitive nature of national security issues. However, Trump has taken a different approach before, engaging people without an official role in diplomatic processes.

On the X platform, Musk has been relatively reserved about war with Iran. Last week, he wrote, “We got lazy” in response to a post about the global reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. He then shared a meme suggesting that problems in the corridor could slow economic and artificial intelligence development.

Musk sees India as a potential market for his companies in the automotive, space and artificial intelligence sectors. Tesla has previously faced high entry fees in the Indian market, while Starlink is still awaiting approval to operate in the country.
