The US State Department has announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend the ceasefire for another 45 days, with the aim of facilitating progress in political negotiations.
According to State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott, the “cessation of hostilities” that began on April 16 has been extended. The department is ready to “resume the political track of negotiations” on June 2 and 3.
The announcement comes at a time of tension on the ground. The Israeli army's Arabic-language spokesman sent an urgent alert to residents of the Lebanese city of Tyre, accusing Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, of violating the ceasefire agreement.

“On May 14 and 15, the United States hosted two days of highly productive talks between Israel and Lebanon. The April 16 cessation of hostilities will be extended for 45 days to allow for further progress. The State Department will resume political negotiations on June 2 and 3. In addition, a security negotiation will begin at the Pentagon on May 29 with military delegations from both countries. We hope that these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the establishment of genuine security along their shared border,” said Tommy Pigott.
The Israeli military (IDF) has marked an area of the city in red and ordered residents there to evacuate immediately and stay at least 300 meters away from the marked area.
Meanwhile, Israeli sources report that Israel is preparing for a possible renewal of the conflict with Iran. According to a senior Israeli official, reported by Channel 12 and the Times of Israel, preparations for a new round of fighting with Tehran are in an advanced stage.
The extension of the ceasefire is expected to create a window of time for diplomatic efforts, but Israeli military warnings in Tyre indicate that the situation on the ground remains fragile and vulnerable to any incident.
