The critical issue is that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is not present at this ongoing meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska - even as the two leaders discuss the war Putin is waging in Ukraine.
So what will happen when the meeting is over? Trump has said he will call Zelensky, as well as European leaders, after the summit to brief them on the results. He has made it clear that his ultimate goal is to get Putin and Zelensky together in the same room to discuss how to end the war.
Trump said Wednesday that it could happen "almost immediately" if today's meeting goes well, potentially even in Alaska. That seems like a lofty goal — only the logistics of getting Zelensky here quickly would be difficult.
